Girl in the Shadows by Gwenda Bond Book Review

Girl in the Shadows Book Review

This book is filled with magic and courage. Moira Mitchell, who inspires to become a magician just like her father, goes on a journey to become one. She leaves home to join a famous circus despite her father's wishes. Magic soon finds itself with Moira, the kind both explainable and unexplainable. Along with magic, a hidden organization, the Prestige, is introduced into her life. There starts the power struggle of both groups for the ultimate magic relic.

This book took me a long time to finish. I feel like this plot was a bit basic and uninteresting. I feel like perhaps a more complex plot and more unexpected twists would have intrigued me a bit more. I would summarize this story as a girl who finds powerful magic and fights the antagonist for it... not a big fan of it.

Though, this story demonstrates the courage to not give up. The author demonstrates this mainly through the protagonist's story. Moira decides to go to the Cirque's tryouts with no experience whatsoever to put in action her dream despite her father's opposition. She also upright confronts her conflicts instead of running away when she could have to stop harm from coming towards those around her. Even when her plan goes awry, she continues to persist until her goal is reached. She even makes the impossible the possible.

Overall, I think this book was an okay read for me. The book does mention some female magicians and the protagonist dedicates her performances to them which I found interesting. Magic and action go hand on hand in this book. Also, this book kind of gives me "girl power" vibes. I would recommend this book to those who are especially looking to read about life with magic.

  1. Good review! Although it sounds like you didn't have a great experience with this book, it seems that there is a good message which is to not give up despite the many hardships you may face in life. I also love that you noticed the feminist vibes in this book because it can sometimes be hard to pick up on things like that.
