Daughter of the Moon Goddess Book Review

As shown in the title, this book follows the daughter of the Moon Goddess, Xingyin. The Moon Goddess, a prisoner, sends off Xingyin away afraid that someone might discover the secret she has been trying to keep for so long. Accidentally, Xigyin lands in the land of those who incarcerated her mother and Xingyin comes up with one goal, to free her mother from the loneliness she is confined to. She does whatever it takes to achieve her goal.

The plot was really interesting and I found the main character extremely admirable. This might have been seen as a let down to others, but for me the way she always put her mother first above everything else despite temptations was remarkable. The relationship itself was an example of an unbreakable family bond which was what I found enjoyable while reading this book.

One of my favorite quotes from this book was:

“Were you afraid?”

“All the time.” Some might think me a coward, but I felt no shame in admitting it. I was not one of those valiant heroes who plunged into danger so fearlessly. I had been terrified of getting hurt, of failure, and most of all—of death. To never see my mother again, or my loved ones. To regret all the things left unsaid or undone. To leave my life . . . unlived. I had been lauded for my bravery, yet I knew the truth—that I had done these things despite my fear. Because not doing them frightened me more.”

-Sue Lynn Tan, Daughter of the Moon Goddess

This quote just shows a glimpse into what I though was a praiseworthy trait, the willingness to fight her way through. In my opinion, the only downside of this book was that I found her love life conflicting. She had two love interests through out the book. I personally think that she moved too fast in her love life. At some point, it made me question whether her love was genuine. Though I might say that this book was quite lengthy, I don't regret reading this book. If I were to describe it into one word it would probably be encouraging.
