Summary of "New Moon" by Stephenie Meyer - Joey Ray

Starting Note

The second book of the Twilight Saga is called New Moon.  I wrote a pretty big summary on it, and I hope you enjoy.

 Summary

The story begins when Bella’s 18th birthday arrives.  Everyone wants to celebrate her, but she feels the opposite.  She hates that she is getting older as Edward stays the same age due to him being a vampire.  She highly expresses her want to become a vampire.  Though, Edward doesn’t want that because he believes that the vampires get sent to hell whether or not they are good.  Still, Bella’s stubbornness does not allow her mind to budge.

As Edward’s family, the Cullens, throw Bella a birthday party, Bella’s clumsiness causes her a paper cut.  While the family of vampires have been resisting, it isn’t always as easy as it seems.  Jasper, the husband of Edward’s sister, Alice, lashes out and almost kills Bella.  But, he failed.  Jasper felt horrible and so did the family.  This then causes an awkwardness between Bella and Edward.

After the Cullen family moves, Bella falls into a huge depression for months.  She also has nightmares that wake her up in the middle of the night, screaming. Charlie, Bella’s dad, eventually decides to send Bella with her mom and stepdad in Florida.  However, Bella refuses to move.  Charlie says that she can stay, as long as she tries to get a life.

Following Charlie’s wishes, Bella goes out to a movie with Jessica.  Afterward, she sees a familiar group of guys that tried to attack her a year ago.  But, she realizes that it wasn’t them, but pursues them, leaving Jessica alone and confused.  Suddenly, she experiences delusion of Edward telling her to not go with those guys.  She eventually returns to Jessica, who is furious, and goes home.

After the amazing delusion she experienced, she realizes that in order to have more, she needs to break her promise she made to Edward by being reckless.  She later decides to hang out with Jacob, a friend who lives on a reservation, as he fixes up two motorcycles that she got for free from another teen.  She and Jake know that Bella would be in huge trouble if Charlie finds out about her plan to ride a motorcycle.  But it didn’t matter, all that mattered to her was that she would see Edward in her delusions again.  Jake starts to fall in love with Bella, but she just isn’t ready to fall in love again.  He then starts ignoring her.

Meanwhile, there have been many disappearances in town and reports on very large bears in the forest.  Eventually, Bella encounters them while returning to a special spot in the woods where she and Edward used to go.  However, they turned out not to be bears; they were HUGE wolves!

Eventually, Bella worries that Jacob had joined a gang in the reservation.  Jake confirmed these thoughts, but says that the gang isn’t bad.  But he cannot say more.  Bella can tell that something strange was going on with Jake; but she can’t figure it out.  One night, Jake appears at her house and reminds her of a story about his and Edward’s ancestors.  Though, she can only remember the part about Edward’s family “supposedly” being vampires.  Jacob had also revealed that he knew about the Cullens being vampires.  He tried to get Bella to remember the part with his ancestors, but he failed.  That night, Bella remembered it all in a dream.  And so she knew… Jacob was a werewolf!

When she told the gang that she knew about the werewolves, Jacob and her were friends again.  Apparently, Jacob and his pack of werewolves were hunting down a vampire named Victoria for wanting to kill Bella.  This explained the disappearances lately.  Victoria wanted to kill Bella because Edward had killed her mate, James, when he attempted to kill Bella.  As they hunted, Bella decided to do something extremely dangerous.  Cliff diving.  She ended up drowning and almost being killed by Victoria, who had jumped into the water while being hunted by the wolves.  Fortunately, Jacob had saved Bella before anything worse happened.

Later, Bella was surprised when a little friend showed up at her house.  It was Alice, Edward’s awesome sister who could see the future.  There had been a misunderstanding.  Alice had seen that Bella jumped off the cliff and assumed she was committing suicide.  I was told Bella that Edward had separated from the family and lived on his own in sadness.

Eventually, Jacob came inside and answered Bella’s phone when someone called.  Jacob said something about a funeral.  Bella was furious when she found out that it had been Edward asking about Charlie.  Rosalie, another sister, had told Edward about Alice’s vision about Bella jumping off the cliff.  Rosalie was so annoying.  And so was Jake.  Jake had told Edward that Bella died!  I hate Jake so much.  I don’t care what anyone else says.  Alice then saw a vision of Edward going to the Volturi, a powerful and royal vampire family, to tell them that he revealed the secret of vampires to Bella.  This would get him killed… he wanted to die.

Instantly, Bella and Alice left to Vulterra, Italy to save Edward. On the way, Alice saw that Edward had been rejected by the Volturi.  This bought them a little bit of time.  However, Edward had decided to walk outside of the Volturi building and expose his sparkling skin in front of a whole huge festival.  This would definitely get him killed.  Alice and Bella had to make it by noon before Edward ruined his life for good.  Bella ran across the city and eventually stopped Edward.  But before they could leave, the leader of the Volturi, Aro, wanted to see Bella, Edward, and Alice.

Although the rule of keeping the vampire race a secret was broken, Aro touched Alice to read her mind.  He saw Alice’s vision where Bella was a vampire.  Thus, Aro agreed to let them go, as long as Bella changed soon.  Unlike Edward, Bella was happy about this.

Later, Bella gathered the Cullen family to vote whether or not she becomes a vampire. Even though she had no choice, according to the Volturi, Edward was sure that they wouldn’t have to worry about it for a long time.  But, Bella wanted this, NOW.  Most of the family was in favor of her becoming a vampire.  Eventually, Edward said that he would be okay with it happening sooner, as long as Bella agreed to marry him.

Ending Note

As a person who hates to read, I have to say, these Twilight books can be pretty addicting.  But this is my ONE exception, Mr. Mitchell.  Don't get any ideas! 🤣
