Mumbo Jumbo blog post

Ishamal Reed described Jes Grew as a mysterious "plague" of rhythm, joy, and expression that sweeps across America, with its heart at Harlem. This epidemic threatened the quiet traditional ways of Western civilization because it is different and isn't really understood. But, while Jes Grew was portrayed as a fictional "disease" that became known as the Harlem Renaissance, it's pretty evident that Jes Grew never really ended, but simply resurfaced through different forms. As time has evolved, so has Jes Grew. With new forms of expression like social media, which provide new avenues for millions to share their content through dances, cooking, or simply sharing their opinions, Jes Grew has taken several forms by challenging mainstream norms.  In Mumbo Jumbo, Jes Grew is made to be contagious, which perfectly aligns with modern music and dance. Modern music is constantly changing. As new producers enter the space and add new types of sounds and beats, the mus...

Summary and thoughts on "Eclipse" by Stephenie Meyer --Joey Ray

Note: I finished reading this a little big ago.  And I've seen the movie so many times.  I started reading Breaking Dawn (Next Twilight Book), but felt it would be weird to skip a book and write a summary and spoil things that may be hard to understand without knowing what happened in Eclipse.  So if you notice any mix ups between the movie and the book, I apologize.  But I tried to remember correctly about the book.  Enjoy!      When many missing persons cases occur in Seattle, Bella and the Cullens have no idea that they are involved with the conflict.  Suddenly Alice, Edward's sister, has a vision that seems to startle her greatly.  Bella can tell that something is going on, but Edward won't say.        Soon, Edward arranges for Bella to use her birthday gift from Esme and Carlisle, Edward's parents, which are plane tickets to Pheonix to visit her Mom, Renee.  After the trip, the Bella...

One Day in December by Josie Silver - Aldo

Image
This novel follows a woman named Laurie who, at first, doesn't believe in love at first sight. However, that all changes one day when she sees a man at the bus stop. They lock eyes, and she instantly knows he's the one. She spends the next year looking for him at every bus stop and cafĂ©.  They will inevitably meet again. Laurie scans every bus stop and cafe in London for him a year. However, she does not see him when it matters. Instead, they “reunite” at a Christmas party when her best friend Sarah introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus.  The ten years that follow for Laurie, Sarah, and Jack are filled with friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, undecided roads, and destinies. A joyous, heartwarming, and incredibly moving love story about losing yourself, One Day in December reminds us that fate may take unexpected turns along the way. I really liked the novel and all the twists and turns that it takes. It was great to see how the chara...

Girl in the Shadows by Gwenda Bond Book Review

Image
Girl in the Shadows Book Review      This book is filled with magic and courage. Moira Mitchell, who inspires to become a magician just like her father, goes on a journey to become one. She leaves home to join a famous circus despite her father's wishes. Magic soon finds itself with Moira, the kind both explainable and unexplainable. Along with magic, a hidden organization, the Prestige, is introduced into her life. There starts the power struggle of both groups for the ultimate magic relic.      This book took me a long time to finish. I feel like this plot was a bit basic and uninteresting. I feel like perhaps a more complex plot and more unexpected twists would have intrigued me a bit more. I would summarize this story as a girl who finds powerful magic and fights the antagonist for it... not a big fan of it.      Though, this story demonstrates the courage to not give up. The author demonstrates this mainly through the protagonist'...

The Giver - Aldo Zepeda

For my blog post, I decided to re-read one of my favorite books. The Giver by  Lois Lowry. Jonas, the protagonist of The Giver, lives in an idyllic society free of crime and sadness. After 12 years of age, children are assigned jobs that they will train for and perform throughout their lives. The government controls every aspect of your life, from your parents to your partner. Jonas stands apart from the community when he is determined to become the new Memory Keeper. Throughout history, society has remained free of all negative aspects of life because someone has held all the good and bad memories of the past. Despite being protected from harm, the residents are not exposed to the beauty of life, which is both good and bad. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the process by which Jonas loses trust in his parents throughout the book, showcasing the story's moral. As an average child in the community, Jonas initially trusts his parents completely. He eventually loses his...

Summary of "New Moon" by Stephenie Meyer - Joey Ray

Starting Note      The second book of the Twilight Saga is called New Moon.  I wrote a pretty big summary on it, and I hope you enjoy.       Summary      The story begins when Bella’s 18th birthday arrives.  Everyone wants to celebrate her, but she feels the opposite.  She hates that she is getting older as Edward stays the same age due to him being a vampire.  She highly expresses her want to become a vampire.  Though, Edward doesn’t want that because he believes that the vampires get sent to hell whether or not they are good.  Still, Bella’s stubbornness does not allow her mind to budge.          As Edward’s family, the Cullens, throw Bella a birthday party, Bella’s clumsiness causes her a paper cut.  While the family of vampires have been resisting, it isn’t always as easy as it seems.  Jasper, the husband of Edw...

Of Mice and Men by Jhon Steinbeck Book Review

Image
This book follows two main characters Lennie, a disabled man, and George, his bestfriend, during the Great Depression. They escape from their anterior location due to a misunderstanding of rape accused at Lennie. They arrive at a new workplace and settle in to earn some money in a farm. They have the typical "American dream" of making enough money to buy themselves a house and their own little farm. Though, trouble seems to arrive with Curley, the boss's son, and his attention-seeking wife. After an unfortunate event between Lennie and Curley's wife, things start going downhill.      Let me just start with saying that this book was really interesting although very tragic. I think that Lennie was generally a misunderstood character by the rest of the characters. Though, it was really nice to see George stay besides Lennie all the way to the end. Their friendship lit up a spark of hope through the mist of turbulence.      I don't think I'...
